Who Needs To Use This Update?
Not everyone needs to update from 4.5 to version 4.5.1. In fact, only a few customers have called to report the problems that 4.5.1 addresses. Updating is not difficult, but a number of steps are required. If you decide to update to 4.5.1 (after reading the list of problems this update covers) we recommend that you print this Read Me file and have the instructions at hand while you update.
The DiskTop 4.5.1 updater fixes these minor problems in DiskTop 4.5:
- System 7 Pro users discovered that a "volume" entitled Mail Enclosures appears in the Find Criteria dialog box. Attempting to search this volume caused the Macintosh to crash. This problem has been fixed in DiskTop 4.5.1.
- People printing the contents of the DiskTop window discovered that strange characters appeared where the column headings should be or that the computer would crash. This problem has been fixed in DiskTop 4.5.1.
- If users added a type or creator to the bottom of the pop-up menus of types and creators found in the Find Criteria dialog box, the new type or creator was placed at the top of the menu instead of at the bottom or that odd characters would appear. This problem has been fixed in DiskTop 4.5.1.
- People using Adobe Type Manager on Macintosh computers that use the 68000 processor discovered that clicking the "Find" button or selecting "Path..." from the DiskTop menu would cause the computer to crash. This problem has been fixed in DiskTop 4.5.1.
- People who had previously renamed CEToolbox to something that would place it later in the alphabet (so it would load later in the startup process) discovered that the Installer did not correctly install CEToolbox when DiskTop 4.5 was installed. This problem has been fixed the new DiskTop Installer.

Synopsis of the Update Process
To update, you will copy the DiskTop 4.5 disk to the hard disk, update the DiskTop resources and the DiskTop Installer, then copy the (now updated) DiskTop files to a new disk and install DiskTop 4.5.1 from the new disk.

Creating the DiskTop 4.5.1 Disk
We suggest that you turn off or disable any antiviral software before beginning with step 1 below. To do this, System 7 users can simply restart the Macintosh and hold down the Shift key as it starts. (This disables all INITs and extensions.) System 6 users should consult the documentation for their antiviral program to learn how to temporarily disable it, or use an INIT manager to disable their INITs.
1) Find the DiskTop disk that came in your DiskTop 4.5 package. (Two disks came in the package-use the DiskTop disk, not the GOfer manual disk.) Insert the disk, drag its icon onto the root level of your hard disk. This will copy the disk and place its contents in a folder named "DiskTop" on your hard disk. (If you use System 7.x, the DiskTop folder will show the same custom icon as the DiskTop 4.5 disk. System 6.x users will see a folder instead of the custom icon.) Eject the floppy disk, but keep it handy. Later we will need the serial number found on the back of the disk.
2) Open the DiskTop 4.5.1 Updaters folder (which you previously expanded from the "DiskTop 4.5.1 Updaters.sea" if you are reading this file) and drag the icons for both DiskTop 4.5.1 Updater and DiskTop Install Updater into the DiskTop folder (created in step 1).
3) Open the DiskTop folder and double-click the DiskTop 4.5.1 Updater icon. The Updater dialog box will open with "DiskTop" (located in the Installer Resources folder) selected. Click "Update."
Note: The Updater looks for files associated with DiskTop version 4.5. If the Update dialog box opens with any other file or folder selected, ensure that:
a) the Updater is placed in the DiskTop folder created in step 1 above, and
b) the DiskTop files in this folder are version 4.5, not newer or older versions.
4) After a few moments, a dialog box will state that the update was completed successfully and the version 4.5 DiskTop file has been deleted. (This means the DiskTop 4.5 file in the DiskTop folder was replaced by the DiskTop 4.5.1 file.) Click "OK."
5) Double-click the DiskTop Install Updater icon. The updater dialog box will open with the DiskTop Install file (located in the DiskTop folder) selected. Click the "Update" button.
6) A dialog box will state that the update was completed successfully and the DiskTop Install file has been deleted. Click "OK."
7) Drag both update icons (DiskTop 4.5.1 Updater and DiskTop Install Updater) from the DiskTop folder to the Trash.
8) Insert and format a new, blank floppy disk (or erase all contents of a floppy disk you no longer need using the "Erase Disk..." command in the Special menu of the Finder). The name given to the blank floppy disk is not important. We will rename it to "DiskTop" later.
9) Open the DiskTop folder (if it is not already open) and click within the folder window to ensure that it is the active window. Press Command-A to select all the items in the DiskTop folder. Drag the items onto the icon for the blank disk.
Note: You may be tempted to simply drag the folder to the blank disk. Do not do this. The items you move to the blank disk need to be at the root level of the disk. If you drag the entire folder (not just the contents), the installer script will not locate the items it needs.
10) Correctly name the new blank disk. It must be named "DiskTop" with no spaces before or after the name or anywhere within the name. The "D" and "T" must be upper case with all other letters lower case.
Tip: You can close the DiskTop folder and select its name, copy the name to the Clipboard, select the floppy disk's name and paste the correct name from the Clipboard.
11) Finally, eject the floppy disk and place a label on it. Mark the label "DiskTop 4.5.1" and write your serial number on it. (from the original DiskTop 4.5 disk)
Now you have a new master disk for DiskTop 4.5.1.

Installing DiskTop 4.5.1

Your DiskTop manual (from your DiskTop 4.5 package) describes how to install DiskTop. Follow the instructions given there, but use your new DiskTop 4.5.1 disk.
Restart your computer after installing 4.5.1. Open DiskTop and personalize it. Use the serial number that came on your DiskTop 4.5 disk.
After you have successfully installed DiskTop 4.5.1, you may drag the DiskTop folder (created in step 1 above) from your hard disk to the Trash and empty the trash.
Note: If you prefer to use DiskTop to delete this folder, make sure you are deleting the DiskTop folder at the root level of the hard drive. Also, be sure it is the "DiskTop" folder, not the "Desktop folder."

When You Are Finished...
Store your DiskTop 4.5 disk and your DiskTop 4.5.1 disk in a safe place.
